About the Cemetery

Originally Founded at the "Bunte Cemetery", records date back to 1925, and the oldest burials are north of circle drive at the rear of the Cemetery. The Bunte family owned many businesses, including the local brick yard and farm implement dealer. Within 5 years, Henry Bunte expanded the cemetery, built a caretaker's home, and completed a 100 space granite mausoleum. Decades later, the founder's daughter, Hazel Cunliffe-Bunte, inherited ownership and management of the cemetery. She was an active real estate owner and developer in the area, having built many homes and businesses. Towards the end of her time, her niece and nephew-in-law, Barbara and Thomas Stone purchased the cemetery, managing it for over 20 years.  Tom managed it in his retirement, spent dozens of hours every week taking care of and maintaining the grounds.

In early 2021, Darin McLeskey purchased the Cemetery and caretaker's house. Long a native of SE Michigan, much of his family settled downriver, River Rouge and then Trenton. Much like Hazel, he is a real estate broker and manages dozens of rentals. He's renovated many historic properties, including his own pre-Civil War Italiante home. He also has a passion for environmentally friendly practices and is an avid gardner. Darin's deep respect for record keeping, history, and the environment make him an ideal match to manage and continue the legacy of the Huron Valley Cemetery.
